Built by a chef who ran out of options
Forgewell did not start as a business. It started as a problem in a working kitchen, and it was solved the long way round: by going back to Japan and learning how cookware used to be made.
A chef, and a cupboard full of failures
Our founder, [CHEF NAME], spent years cooking professionally. Long services, high heat, a dozen pans moving at once. In that environment cookware is not decoration, it is a tool, and the tools kept failing.
Coated pans lost their surface within months. Cheap aluminium buckled the first time it met a properly hot burner. The expensive brands lasted longer, but they lasted longer in the same direction: they still wore out, they just took another year to admit it.
He kept buying replacements. Every chef he knew did the same. It was treated as a cost of the job rather than as a design failure, which is exactly what it was.
Roots in Japan
He grew up between two kitchens. One in Europe, and one in his family home in Japan, where the pans in the cupboard were older than he was and still worked perfectly.
That contrast never left him. In Japan a good pan is not a consumable. It is repaired, handed down, and expected to outlive the person who bought it. The craft behind that is old: metal shaped by hand, hammer strike by hammer strike, until the surface itself does the work that a chemical coating only pretends to do.
Going back to find the answer
So he went back, not on holiday, but with a question. Why can a pan made a century ago still outperform what I am able to buy today?
The answer turned out to be part technique and part material. Hand hammering creates a dimpled surface that reduces the contact area between food and metal, and that is where genuine, chemical free release comes from. And the material that holds up to that treatment decade after decade is titanium: exceptionally hard, corrosion proof, biocompatible, and with nothing on it that can flake, because there is no coating in the first place.
Passion first, brand second
Forgewell is what happened when a private obsession stopped being private. There was no market gap analysis. There was a cook who could not buy the pan he wanted, so he had it made, and then people kept asking him where they could get one.
Everything else on this page comes from that. The 25 year warranty, the direct pricing, the flat refusal to use coatings: all of it traces back to one chef who got tired of replacing his own tools.
“A pan should outlive the cook who bought it. Everything we make is measured against that one sentence.”[CHEF NAME], founder
Why titanium
Nothing to flake
Our surface is the metal itself, not a layer on top of it. There is no coating to scratch, blister or release into your food, because there is no coating at all.
Biocompatible by nature
Titanium is the same class of material used in surgical implants. Zero PFAS, zero PFOA, zero synthetic nonstick chemistry.
Harder than your utensils
Metal spatulas, whisks, tongs. Titanium is dramatically more scratch resistant than coated aluminium, so you can cook the way you actually cook.
Seasons with use
Like cast iron, the surface improves as it is used. A Forgewell pan two years in performs better than the day it arrived.
How a Forgewell pan is made
- Step 01. The blankEvery piece begins as a solid grade 1 titanium blank. Grade 1 is the purest commercially available grade: the most corrosion resistant and the most formable.
- Step 02. Hand hammeringThe cooking surface is hammered by hand. The dimpled texture is not decoration. It reduces the contact area between food and pan, which is where the natural release comes from.
- Step 03. Heat cyclingEach body is heat cycled to relieve internal stress. This is the step that stops a pan from warping the first time it meets a hot burner.
- Step 04. InspectionEvery unit is checked by hand for flatness, wall thickness and surface finish. Anything outside tolerance does not ship.
